Open Shop – Pen Turning Exercise

This month we will have a Pen Making exercise.  This is NOT a demonstration but a class where you make a pen with the help of an instructor.  If you want to take advantage of this opportunity, you will need to bring all your own supplies.  We will have a complete system set up and can provide a Jacobs Chuck, drills,  bandsaw, and  assembly jig.  Getting started does require a bit of an investment.  Remember NWWT members  get 10% discount from Penn State and Rockler.

Supplies

Tools for each step
1.      Cut the blank into two blanks - bandsaw
2.      Drill the blank – we will use the lathe to drill the blanks.
3.      Square the blank end – Barrel Trimmer & drill
4.      Round the blank – small spindle roughing gouge, bowl gouge, or scrapper
5.      Turn the blank – skew, scrapper, gouge, etc
6.      Apply Finish
7.      Assemble Pen

==============================================================

Open Shop is directed toward the new turner but all are welcome.  Bring a project you want help finishing.  Bring questions about methods, tools, designs or any other woodturning question.  There are seven lathes available for use.  Bring your own tools and wood or buy wood at the shop.

We will have three sharpening stations to help you perfect your sharpening technique. There is no more important topic for the new turner (or the old ones for that matter) than sharpening.

Please register and join the waitlist if full so we know how to plan our support.  If you are on the Waitlist, you are still welcome and encouraged to come to socialize, sharpen, or talk.

Registrants are guaranteed use of a lathe and others can use one when one becomes available.  There will always be three or more advanced turners there to help, sharpen tools, and answer any questions.

Open Shop is free, but the rental Portable Rest Room and our coffee and doughnuts cost money.    A $20 donation would help defray expenses.
